Overview of Course
This course investigates the complexities of early childhood language acquisition in deaf and hard of hearing children, with particular attention to the distinctions between social and academic language development and the effects of language deprivation on literacy.
It critically assesses the efficacy of ASL Immersion Classes in addressing these issues. Key topics include the differentiation between social and academic language skills, the Critical Period Hypothesis, and methodologies for promoting language development through enriched interactions, creative play, and story signing.
Participants will formulate targeted educational and bilingual strategies aimed at supporting children with delayed language development, with an emphasis on the role of ASL Immersion Classes in advancing language instruction and literacy outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Participants will identify and describe inherent barriers to early language acquisition in children and recognize how these barriers affect the development of social and academic language skills.
Participants will differentiate between social and academic language acquisition, including their respective timelines and facilitating activities, while inspecting the impact of barriers on the overall language acquisition process.
Participants will investigate the effects of language deprivation on Deaf children's literacy development and curricular engagement, analyze the challenges experienced by Deaf children with limited literacy exposure, and formulate strategies to mitigate these challenges.
