Overview of Course

This course delves into the essential principles of educational interpreting, highlighting the nuanced differences between teaching and tutoring for Deaf students. The course focuses on Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, teaching participants to use scaffolding techniques that foster autonomy and enhance learning. Participants will explore the IRE/IRF Cycle—Initiation, Response, Evaluation/Follow-up—to transform teacher prompts into engaging questions that promote active student participation. Emphasizing the humanity in interpreting, participants will learn to make empathetic and adaptable decisions, recognizing and addressing the needs of Deaf students beyond rigid job roles. The course encourages interpreters to collaborate effectively with teachers and stakeholders, ensuring that Deaf students are supported with the necessary resources and opportunities for language exposure. Through real-world examples, participants will be equipped to create inclusive educational environments that empower Deaf students and enhance their educational outcomes.
