Little/None   ☐ Some   ☐ Extensive   ☐ Teaching

Target Audience: Certified interpreters, Associate members, student interpreters, and interpreter educators seeking ethics refreshers, as well as Deaf Professionals and HR Professionals.

Workshop/Course Description
This self-paced asynchronous micro-learning activity examines the concept of processing time in sign language interpreting, often referred to as lag time or ear-voice span, through a cognitive and research-based lens. Participants will read conference proceedings that explore why the term “processing time” more accurately reflects the interpreter’s active mental work, including comprehension, transfer, reformulation, and decision-making. Learners will engage with the content by completing a multiple-choice knowledge check and reflective short-response prompts that connect research findings to real-world interpreting practice. This activity emphasizes cognitive load management, working memory, and strategic decision-making as central components of effective interpretation.

Educational Objectives (Measurable and Observable):
Participants will be able to identify differences between the concepts of lag time and processing time, explain why processing time is a more accurate descriptor of interpreting cognition, and describe factors that influence changes in processing time. Participants will also analyze their own interpreting work and apply cognitive strategies to manage processing demands in high-density discourse.

Media/Materials: CEUs PDQ learning platform (web-based LMS) with embedded multiple-choice question and reflection prompts.

Evaluation & Assessment: Participants will be required to complete the instructional materials, answer a multiple-choice knowledge check, and complete short-response reflection prompts demonstrating having read or viewed and applied the material.
