Workshop/Course Description
This self-paced asynchronous micro-learning activity examines the historical “Helper Model” of interpreting and why it is now considered outdated and inappropriate within modern professional practice. Participants will read a foundational text exploring philosophical frameworks that shaped early interpreting work and how the Helper Model positioned interpreters as caretakers rather than facilitators of communication. Learners will engage with the material by completing a multiple-choice knowledge check and reflective short-response prompts that analyze the ethical implications of paternalism, autonomy, and power in interpreted interactions. This activity emphasizes contemporary consumer-oriented and bilingual-bicultural frameworks that center Deaf agency and self-determination.
Educational Objectives (Measurable and Observable):
Participants will be able to identify defining characteristics of the Helper Model, explain why this philosophy undermines Deaf consumer autonomy, and describe how modern interpreting frameworks reject paternalistic practices. Participants will also analyze real or observed situations and apply consumer-centered approaches that promote equality, collaboration, and ethical interpreting practice.
Media/Materials: CEUs PDQ learning platform (web-based LMS) with embedded multiple-choice question and reflection prompts.
Evaluation & Assessment: Participants will be required to complete the instructional materials, answer a multiple-choice knowledge check, and complete short-response reflection prompts demonstrating having read or viewed and applied the material.
