Target Audience: Sign Language Interpreters, Interpreter Educators, Mentors, ITP Students, HR Professionals and Deaf Professionals.
Workshop/Course Description:This self-paced asynchronous micro-learning activity examines the legal requirements for effective communication under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Participants will explore how covered public and private entities are required to provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services to ensure that communication with individuals who have communication disabilities is as effective as communication with others.
The activity highlights how factors such as the complexity, length, and context of communication influence which auxiliary aids are appropriate, and how interpreters, captioning, and other communication supports function within ADA compliance. Participants will analyze how assumptions about cost, convenience, or technology can conflict with legal obligations for equitable access. Through guided reflection and knowledge checks, participants will examine how interpreters and institutions can support compliance with effective communication standards while protecting the rights and autonomy of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
Educational Objectives (Measurable and Observable): Participants will be able to identify the ADA’s legal requirements related to effective communication and auxiliary aids and services as a result of this micro-learning activity. Participants will be able to describe how factors such as context, communication complexity, and individual preference influence the determination of appropriate communication access services as a result of this micro-learning activity. Participants will be able to analyze how interpreters and institutions can support ADA compliance by advocating for communication methods that ensure equally effective access as a result of this micro-learning activity.
Media/Materials: CEUs PDQ learning platform (web-based LMS) with embedded instructional video, reading reference, multiple-choice knowledge check, and structured reflection prompts.
Evaluation & Assessment: Participants will be required to complete the instructional materials, answer a multiple-choice knowledge check, and complete short-response reflection prompts demonstrating having read or viewed and applied the material
