Target Audience: Sign Language Interpreters, Interpreter Educators, Mentors, ITP Students, HR Professionals and Deaf Professionals.
Workshop/Course Description: This self-paced asynchronous micro-learning activity examines the structure and purpose of voir dire as a jury selection process in which attorneys and judges question prospective jurors to assess bias and impartiality. Participants will analyze how the use of open-ended questions, hypothetical scenarios, and conversational questioning creates a communication environment that differs significantly from structured witness testimony. The activity focuses on how these discourse patterns introduce rapid turn-taking, personal narratives, and unpredictable topic shifts, requiring interpreters to make real-time decisions to preserve completeness and accuracy. Emphasis is placed on interpreter preparation for process-specific terminology such as challenges for cause and peremptory challenges, as well as ethical considerations related to neutrality, timing, and maintaining record integrity within a fast-paced, juror-centered interaction.
Educational Objectives (Measurable and Observable): Participants will be able to analyze how the conversational and open-ended structure of voir dire influences communication flow, evaluate the impact of rapid exchanges and narrative responses on interpreter decision-making, and apply professional strategies to maintain neutrality and preserve accuracy, equivalence, and record integrity during juror questioning.
Media/Materials: CEUs PDQ learning platform (web-based LMS) with embedded instructional video, reading reference, multiple-choice knowledge check, and structured reflection prompts.
Evaluation & Assessment: Participants will be required to complete the instructional materials, answer a multiple-choice knowledge check, and complete short-response reflection prompts demonstrating having read or viewed and applied the material.
