Course Description

The Next Level Interpreting Lab is a dynamic, 6-part asynchronous intensive designed to bridge the gap between "knowing ASL" and "mastering the craft of interpreting." Moving beyond rote certification prep, this lab focuses on the holistic development of the interpreter.

We recommend allotting 1 part to 1 week, completing the intensive in 6 weeks (plus an extra week scheduled in for catching up!), but your access to the course will not expire and you can work ahead or take your time!

Participants will engage with in a high-quality module series led by a collaborative team of Deaf/ASL and Hearing Interpreting Mentors. This dual-perspective approach ensures that linguistic nuances, cultural palm-checking, and technical processing skills are developed simultaneously. Whether you are preparing for your first credential or looking to refine years of practice, this lab provides the "scaffolding" needed to reach your next professional plateau.

This COURSE and DEAF MENTOR access includes:

  • 6-part structured course
  • Fully asynchronous, do on your own time but with structured accountability
  • No additional recording software required
  • Comprehensive practice across all modalities:
  1. Receptive (ASL → English)
  2. Expressive (English → ASL)
  3. Transliteration
  4. Sight translation
  5. Interactive interpreting
  • Practice strategies and test-taking tips
  • Additional independent practice activities

PLUS:

  • Up to 1.5 hours of individualized mentorship with a Deaf mentor
  • Up to 1.5 hours of individualized mentorship with a Hearing mentor
  • Integrated feedback from both Deaf and hearing perspectives

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 6-part series, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze Source Text: Deconstruct complex English and ASL texts to identify core meaning, affect, and register.
  • Enhance Linguistic Fluency: Incorporate advanced ASL grammatical structures, including depictions (classifiers), spatial mapping, and non-manual markers (NMMs).
  • Perform Self-Diagnostic Assessments: Utilize a structured rubric to identify personal patterns of error and track growth over time.
  • Synthesize Feedback: Integrate specific feedback from Deaf and hearing mentors into live-action interpreting samples.

Teaching Methods

This course utilizes a Multimodal Asynchronous Approach to accommodate working professionals and students:

  • Guided Mentor Support: Weekly modules include structured guidance and insight from Deaf and hearing mentors, offering context, lived experience, and professional perspective.
  • Guided Reflection: Journaling and discussion board prompts to process internal cognitive shifts.
  • Feedback Loops: Personalized, recorded video feedback from tutors on participant work samples.
  • Scaffolded Practice: Exercises that transition from simple linguistic drills to complex, simultaneous interpreting tasks.
