Professional Studies - 1.0 CEUs (PPO)
This Power, Privilege and Oppression-approved CEU workshop will help interpreters to:
Please note that this is a writing-intensive workshop.
This WWWorkshop will address the myriad issues of Power & Privilege (P&P) primarily for interpreters but also with a general application. Interpreters are placed in positions of “power” with respect to outcomes of people’s lives. As a result, interpreters much be aware of the types of P&P they possess in order to make decisions more thoughtfully and with an effort to empower consumers for whom they serve.
Throughout this WWWorkshop, Tricia and Tar will provide explanations and examples to help interpreters understand what power & privilege they possess, a tool to assess the types of P&P they have (as well as others), how this impacts the decisions they make, and challenges to make decisions with constant consideration of the Power & Privilege to empower consumers instead of disempower and oppress.
Educational Objectives:
There are two primary objectives for this WWWorkshop:
Ultimately, with this knowledge and awareness, participants are challenged to assess decisions made while interpreting through the lens of the P&P they possess, recognizing the P&P inherent in interpreting jobs and decisions, and the ultimate goal is to empower consumers by making decisions that equalize the P&P as much as possible.
The mandatory activities will ask for you to obtain a deck of cards (or be able to use an online card deck), write in-depth answers about your experience with power and privilege, and analyze some situations and describe how they could be handled differently.
This workshop is presented in ASL.
