This is part two of a two-part workshop. Please note that this workshop requires a few additional materials - see the materials list below. This part continues covering the steps to discourse mapping and has the participant draw and submit a discourse map. We do not recommend that parts 1 and 2 be taken out of order, as Part 1 establishes the information and teaches the skills and Part 2 has you apply the new skills. Part 2 cannot be completed without submitting activities, which require materials as outlined below.

This workshop will focus on the aspect of interpreting employing a strategy called VISUALIZATION, the use of the mind's eye. Visualization is a product of memory which draws upon our experiences and knowledge of the topic to create a mental image of the people, objects and actions occurring. Visualization is a powerful tool enabling interpreters to transfer their mental processes into a clear, visual representation of the spoken English source message. Participants will analyze a variety of English messages and compare the various images created mentally to strengthen the ability to "let go" of the words (form) and render a target message that is culturally and linguistically equivalent in ASL. This workshop is chocked full of FUN and enjoyable activities. At the conclusion of this workshop, you will have stretched your visualization skills and have done so through activities that will have you smiling AND challenging your worldview to explore the visualizations of not only yourself but the life experiences (memories and visualizations) of the other people involved in each communication process.
Presentation Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have a greater understanding and ability to use the powerful tool of visualization. Participants will understand the importance of using visual imagery in our work, will be able to create and manipulate images, be able to recall significant amounts of specific details and, most importantly, be able to identify how our own cultural experiences frame our visualizations to allow us to reach beyond those and develop a more diverse visualization to meet the cultural experiences of our consumers.
The mandatory activities will ask you to draw and submit a discourse map and to record yourself for the purpose of self-analysis. Please note that the activities in this workshop are dense and writing-heavy.
For this part of the workshop (part 2), you will need to be able to submit some discourse maps. You will also need a way to record yourself for self-analysis. These activities in part 2 are mandatory - the workshop cannot be completed and submitted without completing and submitting the discourse map and submitting a written self-analysis (recordings of yourself are not submitted).
Materials you will need:
-A pen/pencil and paper for drawing the discourse map.
-A pad of sticky notes, standard size (optional but highly recommended).
-A way to upload the map to us (an upload link will be provided in the workshop). A scanner, camera, smart phone scan app, cell phone camera, tablet with camera app, etc will all be able to accomplish this. If you need assistance or want to make sure you are able to upload the map before purchasing this workshop, please drop Kat an email to tech@signs-of-development.org for support.
-A way to record yourself for the self-analysis portion of the workshop. You will not need to send in the recordings, but you will need to be able to view them yourself for the self-analysis activities. This can be a cell phone propped up against a desk, a tablet, a camera on a tripod, a webcam on your computer or laptop, or anything else. Again, the recordings will not be sent in - you will just need to be able to review them for your self-analysis activity.
This workshop is presented in ASL.
