This is part one of a two-part workshop. This part covers the basics of visualization and discusses the steps to discourse mapping. We  do not recommend that parts 1 and 2 be taken out of order, as Part 1 establishes the information and teaches the skills and Part 2 has you apply the new skills.

This workshop will focus on the aspect of interpreting employing a strategy called VISUALIZATION, the use of the mind's eye. Visualization is a product of memory which draws upon our experiences and knowledge of the topic to create a mental image of the people, objects and actions occurring. Visualization is a powerful tool enabling interpreters to transfer their mental processes into a clear, visual representation of the spoken English source message. Participants will analyze a variety of English messages and compare the various images created mentally to strengthen the ability to "let go" of the words (form) and render a target message that is culturally and linguistically equivalent in ASL. This workshop is chocked full of FUN and enjoyable activities. At the conclusion of this workshop, you will have stretched your visualization skills and have done so through activities that will have you smiling AND challenging your worldview to explore the visualizations of not only yourself but the life experiences (memories and visualizations) of the other people involved in each communication process.

Presentation Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have a greater understanding and ability to use the powerful tool of visualization. Participants will understand the importance of using visual imagery in our work, will be able to create and manipulate images, be able to recall significant amounts of specific details and, most importantly, be able to identify how our own cultural experiences frame our visualizations to allow us to reach beyond those and develop a more diverse visualization to meet the cultural experiences of our consumers.

The mandatory activities will ask you to act out some scenarios, apply some strategies you have learned, and identify register changes. Please note that the activities in this workshop are dense and writing heavy.

For this part of the workshop (part 1), you will not need any materials. However, for part 2, please note that you will need to draw a discourse map and submit it. You will also need a way to record yourself for self-analysis. These activities in part 2 are mandatory - the workshop cannot be completed and submitted without completing and submitting the discourse map and submitting a written self-analysis (recordings are not submitted).

This workshop is presented in ASL.

Content Knowledge Level = Extensive
